NEW BRITAIN MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART

Stephanie Mayer Heydt, PhD, appointed Director of Collections and Exhibitions

Heydt comes to New Britain from the High Museum in Atlanta where she has served as the Margaret and Terry Stent Curator of American Art since 2009, overseeing a collection spanning over 200 years of historic paintings, sculpture, prints and drawing. Her academic specialization is nineteenth-century paintings, prints, and popular culture, but she enjoys the breadth of and diversity of American art and addressing threads and connections over time. Previously, she held positions at the Gulf Coast Museum of Art in Florida, Harvard University Art Museums in Cambridge, and the Terra Museum of American Art (now the Terra Foundation for American Art) in Chicago, in addition to fellowships. Heydt has partnered on museum projects with Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum and is widely published and active in the field.

A graduate of Cornell University, Heydt earned her MA in art history from the University of Chicago and her PhD in art history from Boston University.
